Book Review #3: Beorn the Proud

Madeleine Poland’s exciting story, Beorn the Proud, transports us back in time to 9th century Europe, when Viking raiders are plundering through the coasts of Ireland. Beorn is a daring, yet somewhat conceited, young pagan Viking from Denmark, impatient to become of age so that he can succeed his father as “The Sea King.” In contrast, Ness is a young Irish girl who holds steadfast to her Christian faith and trust in God, especially after having been separated from her family. However, Ness proves that she is every bit as fearless and audacious as any other Viking, as she obstinately asserts her own dignity as a chieftain’s daughter, despite the fact that she has been kidnapped to be Beorn’s slave.

Two different cultures and two contrasting religions come face to face to clash against each other in these two fiery warriors – and yet, an unlikely friendship starts to form between Beorn and Ness. I couldn’t help but notice how Beorn’s attempts at being chivalrous are always accompanied by an arrogant remark or a condescending look, as if he is trying quite hard to convince Ness of his knavish character while simultaneously being nice to her. Also, I find it amusing how Ness responds in a likewise manner, by concealing her appreciation and secret affection underneath many an unsympathetic or recalcitrant response. In spite of themselves, they both come to admire each other’s bravery, sympathize with each other’s struggles, and trust in each other as allies and confidants… not that either of them would actually admit to it though! It is particularly fun to witness the strong relationship that develops between Beorn and Ness, as they grow from being hotheaded frenemies to unspoken partners and genuine helpmates.

Regardless of their stark differences in background, these stalwart co-heroes match each other’s energy to a tee when it comes to being stubborn and opinionated about their beliefs. However, both Beorn and Ness are faced with numerous challenges that push them out of their comfort zones and test their characters. From life-threatening ordeals to the loss of their loved ones, these two youths come to mature and become more accepting, not only of each other’s differences, but also of their own shortcomings. So come and join in the wonderful adventures of Beorn and Ness, as they learn that it is through one’s faithfulness and strength in spirit that even the most difficult hardships and trials are clearly revealed to be blessings in disguise.
